“Try building a following while playing all originals in a small town in the Mississippi Delta… It’s a tough thing to do unless you sell your soul like the Cracker Jacks.”
--Johnny Massey
While jamming one hot muggy summer night (2001) friends, Wade Loper, Johnny Massey, and Alan Jones came across the idea of forming a band. They had all been previously involved with different projects over the past several years and at that point in time everyone was free and looking to rock. So they just continued getting together once or twice a week and occasionally playing at the infamous Bayou City Grill in their stomping grounds of the Mississippi Delta. The result was a handful of excellent originals that needed to be recorded.
Jones and Massey worked up the demos for their first album at several homes and garages over a short period of time. For Halloween 2001 they decided to throw a party and introduce the new material to their select group of friends. They needed a bass player to complete the roster. Long time friend Heath Hendon possessed the enthusiasm and skill to fit the part. So, with the line-up set practice began. With only a few practices they were ready. Now all they needed was a name. They decided to use Massey’s guise The Delta Medicinemen until they came up with something different. The name had been used on a couple of solo records Massey had put out with friends including Loper, Jones, and Hendon.
After Halloween they started the recording process. It only took two weeks and they had a ten-song shot in the dark humorously entitled “Lowercase Jewelry.” Religiously, they sent out copy after copy to all the independent labels that were around at the time. The following months were slow for the Delta Medicinemen, playing only a handful of gigs and no responses to the mass amount of CD’s that were sent out.
Following Christmas they decided to start work on the next release from a band they needed to name. The four tracks were rolling and the storyboards were plentiful. By the middle of March they had completed the recording of sixteen new tracks. After careful consideration they decided to combine the first release “Lowercase Jewelry” with the new songs to makeup the debut album from THE DIG simply called “Ladies & Gentlemen…”
