Run
From "Electrodeziac"
The first tune from the 3PCO album “Electrodeziac.” Made me want to listen to the rest of the album because I really wanted to instead of doing it out of politeness to friends. I think “Electrodeziac” is the most listenable album, as a complete work, of the entire 3PCO, Capture Squad, the Dig/Delta Medicine Men canon. Oddly enough, or perhaps not so oddly, depending on one’s bent, it is comprised solely of instrumentals.
Lonnie Raggs
From "Delta Rain"
Hell of a redneck name. The kind you wish you could have made up. I don’t know how much fun this song is for other people to listen to, but it was a shitload of fun to play on. Still can’t believe I pulled off those drums.
Holy Monsters
From "Midnight Slump"
Although I had nothing to do with this song, it’s proof that Alan Jones is one of the best collaborators I’ve had the chance to play music with. His sense of melody and harmony are what really make this track what it is.
Hot Stomach Holiday
From "Electrodeziac"
Easily, one of the greatest instrumentals in the last 50 years. Sike. It does kick ass, though.
Eye of Travel
From "Delta Rain"
I always liked this song because it was one of the first to show Massey’s songwriting skills start to take hold and blossom within the context of a fairly traditional pop/indie/rock/whatever song structure. It also has some of the most melodic and tasteful lead guitar Massey’s put to (proverbial) tape.
Capture Squad's "Sounder" EP was intended to be the bands break through. I was headed to South by Southwest for the first time. I had a platinum badge, which gave me access to all of the events for the festival (Interactive, Film & Music - read the entire journal entry here). I had been planning my itinerary for weeks. One of the music conference sessions I was planning to attend was open for new talent to drop off a demo and a panel of A&R reps would critique it. This was our shot. A small unkown band from the Mississippi Delta that sounded like a cross between Creedance & Neil Young (on our best days), who wouldn't like that?!?
We worked hard on culling through the mounds of songs we had recorded over the years and ended up with a "best of". Some of the songs were from past Capture Squad albums and a couple were from the last 3PCO album. We thought this was the best representation of our art. Instead of putting two band names on the disc or coming up with yet another band, we decided to go with Capture Squad because it was our fail safe. If we recorded something and it didn't fit the mold for Delta Medicinemen or 3PCO we would throw it in the Capture Squad bin and it would eventually make it on an album.
I was so nervous I remember feeling sick. I made my way through the convention center to the meeting room and there was a guy outside the door with a cardboard box. I had to drop off the CD and they would randomly pick a few out of the box to review. As much as I wanted them to pick mine I found comfort in this random picking. I sat down in the session and they picked the first one... it wasn't ours. The guy was in the audience and the panel tore into him like lions after a wildabeast. I was really sweating by this point. I had already decided that if they picked ours I was going to keep my mouth shut and not notify them that I was in the room. They went through 6 demos listening to the first 30 seconds of the first track and then laying into the artists. There was only one that they liked and it was the worst demo I've ever heard. It sounded like the soundtrack to a Charmin commercial and they loved it. They kept asking him when he was going to be playing next so they could come watch it live. At this point I thought, it's good they didn't listen to mine.
